Research shows digital beats other traditional techniques in precision and accuracy (Pouring, flasking, injection moulding). Less opportunity for human error increases success rates.
A lot of people think it's not possible to get aesthetic results with digital, but the truth is digital has developed and is now at a level that competes with the analog aesthetic. If it's paired with a skilled tech who knows how to finesse, you're onto a winner!
Digital records mean you have copies of everything. Models, bites and dentures. Not only does this save you legally if you need it to, but it also means you may not have to start again when patients come back. Repairs are a dream if you can just print the model again.
Communication between me, the dentist and the patient has improved so much. I can send videos of designs, align the patients face over the design and they can even advise on changes before you waste time and materials sending a tryin that isn't what they want.
The flexibility when setting teeth is a game changer, especially for partials. Carded denture teeth almost never fit so being able to extent necks and change the shape of teeth to match natural dentition has elevated my partial game.
Copy dentures are just that - an EXACT copy. Analog copies are never exactly the same. Digital gives us the option to duplicate dentures with no extra design time: simply send to print or mill with one click. It also allows us to overlay previous dentures or designs to help with new tooth positions, making our job easier and more efficient.
You are able to design from anywhere, giving technicians some flexibility, that we never thought would be possible
Most labs already have the software for other restorations, so do what I do and utilize it as much as you can, by converting to digital dentures too.
Firstly, I'm a technician just like you.
I have been fabricating dentures traditionally for over 10 years and trust me, I've tried it all.
The unique thing about me as an instructor, is that lab technician is still my day job. I'm able to continue to work alongside talented dentists on a range of restorations and appliances, including removable, fixed and implants, all with elements of digital.
It means I have lived experiences, and I do think that's missing from some well known courses available on similar topics.
I don't want to show you the perfect case because the reality is, you'll be clueless on your first day back at the lab.
I want to share my workflow, but on real cases, and explain why I do certain things so you can take that new knowledge back to your lab and get started straight away.
